You are cordially invited to the Blueprint for the DisOrder of Things, an intricate, resonant and visually compelling solo exhibition by Christine Dixie. Dixie is an artist and academic, and was a STIAS Fellow in 2020. Her STIAS residency gave rise to this body of work, which was previously showcased in 2022 at the Wits Art Museum (WAM) in Johannesburg to critical acclaim, and now makes its way back to its point of origin, as it were. This version is presented by GUS in collaboration with Art Source South Africa and Woordfees 2024.

Primarily a printmaker, but extending to film and installation, Dixie’s practice and visual language draw from archival imagery and extensive research. her work interrogates how society, myths, and visual representations have historically conditioned gender roles, as well as explores Europe’s enduring impact on Africa, prompted by the remnants of colonial history in Makhanda, Eastern Cape where she resides and teaches in the Fine Art department at Rhodes University.

  • The exhibition has a ‘soft opening’ on 23 September and Dixie will run a two-day workshop for visual arts students in reimagining found books (old encyclopaedias).
  • The official opening event will take place on Saturday 28 September at 14:00 and Professor Andries Bezuidenhout will be the opening speaker. This is a free event and no reservations are required.
  • The exhibition runs until Sunday 6 October.

We also have two opportunities to hear the artist speak about her work in the gallery:

  • Fri 27 Sept at 13h00: Walkabout to preview the show for staff and students of SU, as part of Visual Arts ‘Visiting Artist Programme’ talks series
  • Sat Sun 29 Sept at 12h00: Public walkabout for Woordfees

All events are free, no RSVP required, all are welcome and please share with your friends, family, students and colleagues.

We look forward to seeing you there.
