BA Visual Arts

The BA Visual Arts programme has a wide range of creative and educational applications and prepares you for careers in the art world. The programme has three streams, namely Fine Arts, Visual Communication Design, and Jewellery Design. The streams make it possible to qualify respectively as a fine artist, graphic designer, jewellery designer and jewellery manufacturer, and art theorist.

Admission requirements for the BA Visual Arts

  • A National Senior Certificate (NSC) or school-leaving certificate from the Independent Examination Board (IEB) as certified by Umalusi with a mark of at least 50% in each of the four school subjects from the list of designated university admission subjects.
  • An average final mark of 60% in the NSC or the IEB school-leaving certificate (excluding Life Orientation) for the three-year programme.
  • Home Language 50%.
  • First Additional Language 40%.
  • Hand a prescribed portfolio of art in by 1 September. Information is available at maties.com > Apply > Application documents.
