Die uitdagings in bio-etiek, die ervaring van \u0149 ongeneeslike siekte, ondersteunde dood, orgaanhandel, voortplanting en aborsie is slegs enkele van die onderwerpe wat deur die Eenheid vir Bio-etiek nagevors word.<\/p>\n
Die Eenheid vir Bio-etiek vorm deel van die Sentrum vir Toegepaste Etiek (STE), wat in 1990 deur prof Anton van Niekerk in die Departement Filosofie aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch gevestig is. Die STE onderneem innoverende navorsing wat fokus op die oplos van etiese uitdagings in geneeskunde, die sakew\u00eareld, die omgewing, die staat en die burgerlike samelewing. Die STE huisves vyf navorsingseenhede, waaronder die Eenheid vir Bio-etiek, \u0149 interdissiplin\u00eare navorsings- en adviesliggaam. Die Eenheid fokus op probleme wat spruit uit die toepassing van etiese norme op praktyke en prosedures in die moderne wetenskap, geneeskunde en biotegnologie.<\/p>\n
Dr Malcolm de Roubaix, \u0149 navorsingsgenoot by die Eenheid, het onlangs \u0149 boek met die titel, Responsible Reproductive Choice in the 21st Century: Procreation and Abortion<\/a>. <\/em>uitgegee. Dit volg op stelselmatige wyse die spoor van die ontwikkeling en belang van vroulike voortplantingsregte, waaronder die reg op die veilige be\u00ebindiging van swangerskap (BvS). Dr De Roubaix benader die eindelose pro-lewe\/pro-keuse-debat uit \u0149 historiese, maatskaplike, emosionele en regsperspektief, met die prim\u00eare fokus op Suid-Afrika teen die globale agtergrond.<\/p>\n Volgens dr De Roubaix is die boek nie slegs tot nut vir morele filosowe, teolo\u00eb, verskaffers van mediese dienste of studente in hierdie vakgebiede nie. Dit is ook toeganklik vir enigeen wat bereid is om hulle aanvaarde oortuigings of idees te bevraagteken en buite-die-kassie-denke aan te gryp.<\/p>\n \u201cDaar word algemeen geglo dat die w\u00eareld oorbevolk is. Tog leef ons in \u0149 verouderende samelewing, en sal die w\u00eareldbevolking binne 60 jaar die hoogtepunt van tussen 10 en 11 biljoen bereik. Die w\u00earelddemografie sal drasties verander en die proporsie bejaarde mense sal baie groter as nou wees. Dit sal \u0149 merkbare invloed op die volhoubaarheid van die samelewing, soos ons dit ken, h\u00ea. Met die lae vrugbaarheidskoers, wie sal werk, onderwys gee, versorg (bejaardes en in gesondheidsorg), of invloei voorsien om versekerings- en pensioenskemas aan die gang te hou? Hoe kan ons hierdie spannings versoen? Is dit dus ons plig om voort te plant? Is voortplanting \u0149 reg of \u0149 voorreg? Wat beteken verantwoordelike voortplanting? Beteken dit dat die armes nie moet voortplant nie? Hierdie en ander vrae word in die boek bespreek.\u201d<\/p>\n Akademiese uitnemendheid is nie vir dr De Roubaix vreemd nie. Buiten vir Procreation and Abortion<\/em>, het dr De Roubaix ook die Afrikaanse boek, Hoop, Heling en Harmonie: Dink Nuut oor Siekte en Genesing<\/em>, uitgegee, waarvoor hy in 2021 die Andrew Murray-prys vir Teologiese Publikasies ontvang het. Die komende hersiening van hierdie boek sal A <\/em>Journey into the Human Experience of Incurable Disease: From Hope to Healing genoem word.<\/em>.<\/p>\n From Hope to Healing <\/em>is \u0149 kritiese ondersoek van die unieke menslike ervaring van en reaksie op siekte en behandeling, wat die liggaam, verstand en die kern van die menslike bestaan en identiteit be\u00efnvloed. Dr De Roubaix s\u00ea: \u201cHierdie boek kyk tydig en stelselmatig na die unieke eise van ons tyd, met volop literatuurverwysings en sitate, en daag die leser uit om van nuuts oor die ervaring van siekte te besin.\u201d<\/p>\n Dr De Roubaix is meer as \u0149 akademikus en navorser; hy is ook in wese \u0149 skrywer, met verskeie boeke op pad \u2013\u00a0Taking ownership of your ageing<\/em> en Tiny habits to age successfully and live longer \u2013 <\/em>en vir die pret, \u0149 bundel kortverhale. In sy vrye tyd is hy besig met die afhandeling van \u0149 bloedige Suid-Afrikaanse misdaadroman, genaamd Broken Lives, <\/em>waarin daar minstens sewe lyke voorkom!<\/p>\n Nog een van die Eenheid vir Bio-etiek se nuwe navorsingsgebaseerde publikasies is Challenges in Medical Ethics: The South African Context<\/em>, onder redaksie van C Jones, M Kruger, J van den Heever en AA van Niekerk. Dr de Roubaix approaches the endless pro-life\/pro-choice debate from a historical, social, emotional, and legal perspective, with a prime focus on South Africa against a global backdrop.\r\n\r\nDr de Roubaix said that the book is not only for the benefit of moral philosophers, theologians, medical service providers, or students within these disciplines. It is also accessible to anyone prepared to question their accepted beliefs or ideas and embrace out-of-the-box thinking.\r\n\r\n\u201cThere is a general belief that the world is overpopulated. Yet we live in an ageing society, and the world population will reach its peak of between 10-11 billion within 60 years. The world\u2019s demography will drastically change, and the proportion of elderly persons will be much higher than it is now. This will have a marked influence on the sustainability of society as we know it.\r\n\r\nWith low fertility rates, who will work, teach, care (for the elderly and in healthcare), or provide inflow to keep insurance and pension schemes afloat? How are we to reconcile these tensions? Do we, therefore, have a duty to procreate? Is procreation a right, or a privilege? What does it mean to procreate responsibly? Does it mean that the poor should not procreate? These and other questions are discussed in this book.\u201d\r\n\r\nDr de Roubaix is no stranger to academic excellence. In addition to Procreation and Abortion<\/em>, Dr de Roubaix published an Afrikaans book titled, Hoop, Heling en Harmonie: Dink Nuut Oor Siekte en Genesing<\/em>, for which he was awarded the 2021 Andrew Murray Prize for Theological Publications. The upcoming revision of this book will be titled, A <\/em>Journey Into The Human Experience of Incurable Disease: From Hope to Healing<\/em>.\r\n\r\nFrom Hope to Healing <\/em>critically investigates the unique human experience and response to illness and treatment, which affects the body, mind, and the core of human existence and identity. Dr de Roubaix said, \u201cThis book timeously and systematically addresses the unique demands of our time, with ample literature references and citations, and challenges the reader to think anew about the experience of illness.\u201d\r\n\r\nMore than an academic and researcher, Dr de Roubaix is an author at heart with several books in the pipeline: Taking ownership of your ageing<\/em>; Tiny habits to age successfully and live longer<\/em>; and for fun, a volume of short stories. In his spare time, he is finalising a gory South African crime novel entitled Broken Lives, <\/em>with no less than seven dead bodies!\r\n\r\nAnother of the Unit for Bioethics\u2019 upcoming research-based publications is Challenges in Medical Ethics: Perspectives from South Africa.<\/em>, edited by C. Jones, M. Kruger, J. van den Heever & A.A. van Niekerk. Four members of the Unit have contributed to this book, namely, Prof Anton Van Niekerk, Prof Willem Landman, Dr Susan Hall, and Dr Andrea Palk.\r\n\r\nProf Anton Van Niekerk, Director of the Unit for Bioethics and the Centre for Applied Ethics said, \u201cWe are particularly proud of Malcolm de Roubaix\u2019s recent work, its accolades, and its prestigious publisher (Cambridge Scholars).
