PANGeA Governance

  • PANGeA is governed by the PANGeA Board consisting of one representative (Principal/Dean: Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences) from each partner institution.
  • PANGeA Board members meet annually to review the progress of PANGeA activities and approve the activities for the year ahead. The annual PANGeA Board meeting also forms part of this meeting.
  • The PANGeA Board appoints a Chair from amongst the Board members to serve a two-year term. The current Chair is Prof Rose Upor (University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania).
  • The Chair of PANGEA is also assisted by the PANGeA Head of Secretariat (Prof Peter Wasamba), and Secretariat Administrator (Dr Nobert Basweti), both are based at University of Nairobi, Kenya.

Prof. Rose A. Upor, PhD is a tenured staff at the University of Dar es Salaam for over 20 years. In 2018, she was appointed as a member of the University of Dar es Salaam Council where she sits as the representative of the University Senate. She is an Associate Professor of Linguistics in the Department of Foreign Languages and Linguistics.

Born and raised in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Prof. Upor attended and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Dar es Salaam with a Bachelor of Arts with Education degree. She also holds a MA in Linguistics from the University of Dar es Salaam and a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Georgia in the United States of America. Rose has more than 21 years working at the University of Dar es Salaam. She boasts 14 years’ experience in senior leadership and executive roles in university governance. She currently serves as the Principal, College of Humanities and the Chairperson of the College Board. She represents the University Council in the Planning, Finance and Investment Committee and the Appointments Committee. Moreover, she has been a member of the University Senate for over 10 years. She was formerly a Head of Department and Director, Office of the Vice Chancellor. She has served as a convenor of several committees on various policy and strategy development for the university. Rose has received executive leadership training from the Harvard Business School and INSEAD (Europe campus).

Dr Nestory Yamungu graduated with PhD in Geography and Environmental Studies from Stellenbosch University, South Africa in 2019. He is PANGeA alumni currently based in the Department of Geography at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania where he is serving as a Senior Lecturer and Head of Department. He specialises in urban governance, regional development and geographical information systems.

Prof Peter Wasamba

Wasamba is a Professor of African Literature at the University of Nairobi. He is also a Law lecturer, and an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. He has over 24 years of research and teaching experience at the university level. Wasamba has served as a university manager for over ten (12) years: as the Chairman, Department of Literature, an Associate Dean and thereafter, and the Dean, Faculty of Arts.

Wasamba is the current Chairman, the University of Nairobi Professors’ Association (UoNPA). Wasamba has been involved in the PANGeA activities since its formation in 2010. He represented the University of Nairobi in PANGeA from 2010 to 2019.  He took a break from PANGeA activities at the end of his Deanship in 2019 but continued advising the Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences on PANGeA activities. Wasamba was reappointed to be the University of Nairobi representative to PANGeA Board in November 2023.  He is an experienced researcher with several publications in peer reviewed journals and a grounded researcher with strong international networks.   He is consultant in higher education management and international collaboration. Importantly, Wasamba is passionate about mentoring students and young academics, and continues to open opportunities for doctoral training, research, and student/ staff exchanges at various universities worldwide.

Prof Jennifer Muchiri

Prof. Jennifer Muchiri teaches in the Department of Literature at the University of Nairobi. She is currently the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. She studied in the University of Nairobi where she earned a Bachelor of Arts  (Literature Major); Master of Arts in Literature, and a PhD in Literature. Her research interests include Life Writing, African Literature, and Women’s Writing and she has published widely in these areas.

Professor Mavis Dako-Gyeke holds a Bachelor of Education Degree from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana; a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Ghana; a Master’s Degree in Clinical Social Work from The Ohio State University, USA, and a Ph.D from Texas Woman’s University, Texas, USA.

She has a distinguished career in academia underpinned with management and administrative experience from the corporate world. Prior to joining the Department of Social Work, University of Ghana in 2009 as a Lecturer, she held the same position at Texas Woman’s University. She was promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, and Professor ranks in 2013, 2016, and 2020 respectively. She was appointed Head of the Department of Social Work from 2014 to 2021, Director of the Centre for Ageing Studies from 2021 to 2023, and is currently Dean of the School of Social Sciences. She has received numerous research grants and has over fifty peer-reviewed academic publications to her credit. Professor Mavis Dako-Gyeke has contributed significantly to the academic life and growth of the University of Ghana through teaching, research, mentorship, and extension services. She serves on several boards and committees within and outside University of Ghana.

Prof Charity Akotia

Charity S. Akotia is a Professor at the Department of Psychology, University of Ghana, Legon. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree from the University of Ghana, Master of Arts from Wilfrid Laurier University, Ontario, Canada, and PhD from the University of Ghana. She has been Dean of the School of Social Sciences, from 2014 to 2020 and has been a strong advocate for PANGeA.

She has helped to promote activities of PANGeA in the University of Ghana. Her specialty is Social and Community Psychology and her main research area is in mental health, specifically, suicide and suicide prevention in a cultural context as well as social issues on gender. As a community psychologist, she takes an interest in working closely with vulnerable and marginalized groups to promote social justice and social change in their communities. Professor Akotia has published widely in several local and international journals. She has also presented papers at conferences worldwide, including keynote addresses. She is currently the National Representative for the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) in Ghana and a Co-Chair of the National Representatives, IASP.

Dr. Helen Nambalirwa Nkabala holds a PhD (Stavanger/Makerere), M.Phil. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Religion and Peace Studies, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, at Makerere University.

She is well equipped with conflict resolution and management Skillsets, relationship building, reconciliation, networking and interpersonal abilities relevant for interacting with different partners. She has won and managed grants with the Mellon Foundation, The Cambridge –Africa Alborada Research Fund, UN Women, Mastercard Foundation, United States Institute of Peace, The Elsie Fund and she is an AHP Fellow. She is the Inaugural Director of the first and so far the only Rotary Peace Center in Africa situated at Makerere University. Helen was member of the Makerere University Council and Chairperson of the Student Affairs Committee 2018-2022. She also serves on the Makerere University Research and Innovations Fund as a Member of the Grants Management Committee, also the Vice Chairperson of the Steering Committee of the Makerere University Grants Management Support Unit, a member of the University Senate and the University staff tribunal. Currently, Helen is the principal of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Makerere University.

Dr Mugumya is a Senior Lecturer and heads the Department of Linguistics, English Language Studies and Communication Skills at Makerere University. He also assists in the coordination of an Interdisciplinary PhD Research Programme College of Humanities and Social Sciences funded by Gerda Henkel Stiftung.

He holds a doctorate from Stellenbosch University, South Africa and an MA in Education and International Development from the Institute of Education, University of London. He also holds a BA in French and English Language Studies from Makerere University. He teaches Applied Linguistics and English Language Studies. His research interests include professional and academic writing, discourse analysis, media genres, evaluative language, and language and conflict. He has published on various issues, including reporting of land conflict and electoral violence in the press; cross-cultural exploration of terrorism narratives; and evolution of Runyankore-Rukiga newspaper genres. Recently, he co-edited a volume titled, Historicising the Humanities at Makerere: Trends, Patterns and Prospects. Currently, he is leading a team of editors on a book project titled Linguistics and African Languages at Makerere University. His current research project is titled Preserving and Transmitting Oral Traditions among the Banyankore: the linguistic renditions of Collective and Individual Memories.

Emmanuel Ngwira holds a PhD (English Studies) from Stellenbosch University‎. He is among the pioneering doctoral graduates under the PANGeA project. He currently serves as Executive Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Malawi (UNIMA) on a three year term from March 2023.

He previously also served as head of the then English Department and Dean of the then Faculty of Humanities at UNIMA. Regarding his academic profession, he is a literary and cultural critic and Associate Professor in the Department of Literary Studies (UNIMA) where he teaches (African) literature and popular arts. In 2018, he was Fulbright Scholar in the Comparative Literature Department at New York University, New York, USA. His research interests include the African Novel and 21st Century Migration, African/Malawian Popular Arts in the Digital Age and Refugees Creative Arts in Malawi.

Ken Junior Lipenga graduated from Stellenbosch University in 2014, as a product of both PANGeA and the Graduate School. He completed his Doctorate studies in the Department of English Studies, with a focus on Disability and Literature.

Since graduating, he has continued to be part of the academic community at the University of Malawi, where he is currently a Professor in the Department of Literary Studies. His interests include intersections between oral literature and disability; humour and folklore; children’s literature, youth studies, and African life writing. Lipenga is the author of Rap Music and the Youth in Malawi: Reppin’ the Flames (2023). He has also published various journal articles and book chapters on different genres of African literature.

Mr. ATANGANA KOUNA is a Full Professor, Vice-Dean in charge of Research and Cooperation at the Faculty of Arts, Letters, and Human Sciences of the University of Yaoundé 1. He is a specialist in immigration literature and has notably published a work entitled The Symbolics of the Immigrant in the Contemporary French-speaking Novel. He is co-founder of the International Association for the Study of Literature and Cultures of the Francophone Space (A.I.E.L.C.E.F.), Executive Secretary of the Workshop of Literary Criticism and Aesthetics, Editor-in-Chief of the Annals of the F.A.L.S.H. and the Résonances magazine.

Stella Viljoen is associate professor in Visual Studies. She has degrees in History of Art and Media Studies. Prof Viljoen has written widely on representational cultures and how these index gender norms and political aspirations.

In particular she has documented the history of the men’s press in South Africa, starting from the early twentieth century to the present. She has a perverse interest in the capitalist imagination and the interrogation of art, design and media as conduits of capitalism but also mechanisms for radical resistance. She is currently researching the ways in which feminism is still useful as a theoretical lens, both in the creation and interpretation of art and media. Her research maps the ways feminism might be evolving. Is is currently Vice-Dean of Research in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Stellenbosch University.
