Stellenbosch University went the extra mile by crossing the border to recruit prospective students for 2025 during the Namibia Careers Expo held from 3 to 4 April at the Windhoek Country Club in Namibia. The event goes back to 2009, when a dedicated group of young professionals established the Namibia Careers Expo with a mission to enlighten, inspire and educate young learners and recent graduates about the diverse array of career paths and opportunities awaiting them. Since then, the Careers Expo has evolved into a thriving annual tradition.

Stellenbosch University’s Student Recruitment and Career Advice Centre received the invitation on behalf of the entire institution and the invitation was extended to the university faculties. Representatives from the Faculty of Engineering (Mr August Engelbrecht) and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (Mr Asanda Alex Plaatjies) only, along with Ms Nazli Daniels (Senior Coordinator: International Undergraduate Marketing and Prospective Support Unit) could attend. The delegation was led by Deputy Director of Student Recruitment, Mrs Magdel Pretorius.

The primary target of the Namibia Careers Expo is high school learners in grades 11 and 12. It also targets organisations that work with young people and private and public tertiary institutions in Namibia and South Africa. It was good exposure and experience for the delegates. In the absence of other faculties, they were ambassadors of Maties and the City of Cape Town who were there to learn, work and play. There was also a strong presence of parents who were graduates of the University and were eager to get their children to study at Stellenbosch University in 2025.
Mrs Pretorius and Ms Daniels were interviewed by Republiklein, a local newspaper, and the local commercial radio station, Fresh FM, where they had the opportunity to market the University’s uniqueness and its various academic programme offerings for first-year students in 2025. “The University has exciting programmes across all 10 faculties; for instance, they have programmes such as a bachelor’s in data science, and a diploma in sustainable development and the environment. Engineering is also very exciting and growing with the Faculty of Engineering. Of course, within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences you find your change agents – people who can communicate, who can venture into broadcasting journalism and entertainment,” said Mrs Pretorius in response to Jane K, presenter of the Fresh Lounge from Monday to Thursday, 19:00 to 22:00.
