BA Humanities
The BA Humanities programme is a general programme in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The programme allows students to choose from a wide range of subjects in the areas of human thought, language, culture, art, people, and society. The programme provides access to a variety of careers by teaching you to think, read and write analytically and critically, identify problems, communicate effectively, and respond to changing sociocultural demands and circumstances. With further postgraduate studies, these are some potential career opportunities: psychologist, philosopher, sociologist, anthropologist, historian, copywriter, editor, language practitioner, teacher, journalist, librarian, and information scientist.
Admission requirements for the BA Humanities
- A National Senior Certificate (NSC) or school-leaving certificate from the Independent Examination Board (IEB) as certified by Umalusi with a mark of at least 50% in each of the four school subjects from the list of designated university admission subjects.
- An average final mark of 63% in the NSC or the IEB school-leaving certificate (excluding Life Orientation) for the three-year mainstream programme.
- An average final mark of 60-62.9% in the NSC (excluding Life Orientation) for the four-year Extended Degree Programme.
- Home Language 50%.
- First Additional Language 40%.
- If you take Socio-Informatics as a university subject, then also Mathematics 50% OR Mathematical Literacy 70%.
