The Centre for Science Communication is hosting its third Imidibaniso Exchange, an annual one-day media and communications workshop for scientists of all disciplines, researchers, communicators, academics, and colleagues involved in any area of the sciences, as well as those interested in interdisciplinary exploration. The Exchange provides a comprehensive and interactive overview of best-practice communication tools and strategies to help share research with a broader audience and improve public engagement efforts.

The programme includes presentations and insights from media and communication specialists, interactive exercises, and exposure to strategies and techniques employed by successful communicators. We are delighted to announce the following speakers for this year’s Exchange. This exceptional panel will provide participants with valuable insights and a chance to learn from voices who are not only leaders in their fields but also passionate storytellers and changemakers:

  • Arthur Feder– Convenor, SAComposers; Composer, Composition and Orchestration Lecturer, SU.
  • Duncan Shelwell– Street Portrait Photographer and Curator.
  • Lester Kiewit– Broadcaster, Reporter, and Host, Good Morning Cape Town, Cape Talk Radio.
  • Maambele Khosa– Head of Media and Communication, CERI (SU); Founder & CEO of SheCab; 2025 Forbes 30 under 30.
  • Prof Mehita Iqani– Director: Centre for Science Communication and NRF SARChI Chairholder: Science Communication, SU. 
  • Mbekezeli Benjamin– Research & Advocacy Officer, Judges Matter; Chairperson, Equal Education.
  • Dr Mwenya Kabwe– Head of Section, Theatre, UCT; Co-curator, Unrehearsed Futures Conversation Series.
  • Dr Uhuru Phalafala– Senior Lecturer, Literary Studies, SU; Author of Mine Mine Mine and The Collected Poetry of Keorapetse Kgositsile.
  • Dr Wayne Muller– Executive Manager: Rectorate, SU; Former Assistant Arts Editor, Die Burger.
