| 21 Februarie is Internasionale Moedertaaldag. Het jy geweet dat jy jou moedertaal as ʼn kenniswegspringplek kan inspan? Ons gebruik almal ons moedertaal as ʼn ondersteunende raamwerk in die verkryging van kennis. Wanneer ʼn mens nuwe kennis bekom, begin jy gewoonlik met bekende inligting en verken die onbekende van daar af. As jy dus op ʼn plek begin waar jy weet wat ʼn sekere konsep in jou moedertaal is, kan jy daar vastrapplek kry. Jy kan dan daardie bekendheid as wegspringplek gebruik om meer komplekse konsepte te verstaan, selfs wanneer hulle in ʼn ander taal as jou moedertaal aangebied word.

21 February is International Mother Language Day. Did you know you can use your mother language as a mental springboard? We all use our mother language as a way to scaffold knowledge. When you acquire new knowledge, you usually start with familiar information and then journey from there into the valleys of unknown knowledge. So, if you start at a place where you know what a certain concept is in your mother language, you have somewhere to kick in your heels and get purchase, and you can use that familiarity as a springboard from where to understand more complex concepts, even when offered in a different language than your mother language.
