In a heartwarming partnership between the Bachelor of Arts Student Committee (BASC) and the Disaster Unit of the Stellenbosch Municipality, a sandwich drive took place on 25 July at Stellenbosch University. With the aim to create a positive impact within their community, the students dedicated 67 minutes of their time to prepare 67 chicken mayo sandwiches. These sandwiches were packaged and subsequently distributed to vulnerable individuals residing in Stellenbosch.

This initiative, coinciding with the celebration of Mandela Day, sought to pay homage to the enduring legacy of Nelson Mandela, who advocated for social change. By participating in this act of kindness, the students paid tribute to his enduring legacy and commitment to uplifting the less fortunate.

Gathered during their lunchtime, the BASC students came together to prepare the sandwiches. With laughter and camaraderie, they pursued their shared goal of aiding those in need. Ms Eyethu Mbele, a member of BASC, expressed her heartfelt gratitude for the initiative: “I extend my heartfelt appreciation to my team for their dedication to the Jonkershoek community and for investing their time in preparing these donations. I am also deeply thankful to the Division of Social Impact for their invaluable support in planning this event and for facilitating the connection with the Disaster Unit. It’s an immense pleasure to contribute to the well-being of people in need.”

The partnership between BASC and the Stellenbosch Municipality’s Disaster Unit stands as a shining example of how collaboration and compassion can make a difference in the lives of others.
